Don’t be intimidated by the title. This dairy free nutritious milk contains simple ingredients and is easier to make than processed mac-n-cheese! You will need a high speed blender and some sort of nut milk bag. In fact, if you’re lazy like me at times, you can get away with skipping the nut milk bag step altogether.
Loaded with Alpha-linolenic-acids, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid, hemp seeds
and flax seeds promote healthy skin, heart, and brain. Both of these seeds also become more bioavailable when crushed/blended, so concocting them into milk is a smart idea!
Note: The ratios below are NOT needed in exact amounts! I prefer the ratios below for 2 reasons: Easy to remember (6 Tbsp total seeds, 6 cups water, 6 dates). Secondly, the sweetness is just enough (in my opinion) to balance the somewhat odd seedy flavor without giving it a dessert-milk taste.
Want a thicker milk? … use less water. Want a sweeter taste? … add more dates. Don’t like flax flavor? … reduce or omit. Want less calories? … Omit flax seeds or reduce dates
Alpha-Omega Milk
4 Tbsp hemp hearts (1/4 cup)
2 Tbsp flax seeds
6 dates, soaked in warm water for 1 hour.
6 cups water, filtered is best!
Pinch of salt (enhances flavor and extends refrigerator life)
Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender (I use Vitamix!) for app. 60 seconds. (Lazy people: go ahead and store in mason jars and refrigerate, just be sure to shake vigorously before each use). Place empty nut milk bag into a large bowl (or empty pot) and pour milk into the bag. Close the top and squeeze the bag to release all the liquid away from the “pulp.” Store milk in a mason jar for 4-5 days.
Enjoy! You may not be accustomed to the taste of hemp and/or flax. Try soaked cashews in this case! They make a wonderful transitional dairy-free milk flavor!
